Corns and calluses build up wherever a shoe or a bone puts repeated pressure on the skin. A small corn can make every step painful. Picking at it, or covering it with a medicated plaster, usually makes things worse. Done properly, removal is quick and painless.
What we will do
- 1. Assess: find out what's causing the pressure: footwear, walking pattern, or a prominent joint.
- 2. Remove: the corn or hard skin is gently reduced with a scalpel. It sounds alarming; it's actually painless, because hard skin has no nerve endings.
- 3. Protect: padding on the pressure point and honest footwear advice, so it doesn't hurry back.
Who it's for
Anyone with painful hard skin, most often on the toes, the ball of the foot or the heel. It's especially common in older feet, where skin thins and joints change shape, and in anyone who spends a lot of the day on their feet. If walking has started to hurt, don't put up with it: this is one of the quickest wins in podiatry.
Good to know
Does removal hurt?
No. Hard skin has no nerve endings, so reducing it with a scalpel is painless when done by a professional. Most people are surprised how gentle it is, and walk more comfortably the same day.
Will the corn come back?
It can, if the pressure that caused it is still there. That's why we pad the pressure point and talk honestly about footwear. The combination keeps most corns away far longer, and regular visits keep them in check.
Are corn plasters safe to use?
Be careful with them. Medicated corn plasters contain acid that can't tell corn from healthy skin, and on thin or diabetic skin they can cause real damage. Having the corn removed properly is safer and works better.
